We visited the latest addition to the wine scene in Niagara-on-the-Lake a few days ago – DeSimone Vineyards. We participated in a lovely tasting with the winemaker – Vincenzo DeSimone and talked about wine, starting a new business and honouring family. Vincenzo and his father planted all the vines in the vineyard by hand after Vincenzo graduated from his winemaking program at Niagara College.
We came home with several bottles (of course!) all signed by Vincenzo! Here is the first of my tasting notes on the wines.
2015 Cabernet Franc
See: From the label we can see that this wine has 13% alcohol. It is deep ruby in colour and clear.
Smell: On the nose we have a clean, medium plus intensity of aromas of prunes, black currant, sweet spices and pepper with some vanilla.
Taste: Dry, with medium plus acidity, medium alcohol and tannin. It has a medium body mouth feel and medium finish. We still get prune and stewed fruit flavours, and the pepper, but also a nice dark chocolate on the finish.
Overall, this wine is good. It is still developing so additional flavours are likely to show thru in maturity – if it lasts that long!
You can pick this wine up at the winery next time you are in the area.
